- DIED. Clarence Norris, 76, the last survivor of the Scottsboro
- Boys, nine black teenagers unjustly convicted of raping two white
- women near Scottsboro, Ala., in 1931, even though one of the women
- withdrew her accusation; in New York City. After 15 years in
- prison, including five on death row, Norris was paroled in 1946
- and fled to New York City, where he worked in a warehouse. When he
- was finally pardoned in 1976, Norris said, "The lesson to black
- people, to my children, to everybody, is that you should always
- fight for your rights, even if it kills you."
